Millamolong is one of the best known
rural properties in Australia.
Jim Ashton purchased Millamolong in 1934. The energy and intelligence that marked his business acumen as well as his international polo fame is reflected in this unique and beautiful property. An impressive contemporary homestead was built with staff quarters. Three generations of the Ashton family have enjoyed the vibrant activities associated with Millamolong. The Aboriginal name “Millamolong” relates to the healing powers of its waters, uniquely rich in calcium, magnesium and other minerals.
Riding strong horses up hills with sweeping views of Mount Canobolas, watching the annual shearing, cattle droving, sheep mustering, swimming and picnics at the Belubula River have all made this pastoral holding an exciting venue together with its invaluable rich agricultural land.
The sale of Millamolong follows the untimely, accidental death of the late James William Ashton who was Millamolong’s owner for the past forty years. After the irreplaceable loss of the property’s dedicated custodian, James’s family are offering a portion of the property for sale for the first time in nearly 76 years.

Millamolong Homestead Farm (c. 1936)
History
This well designed double brick, north facing home was designed by the outstanding architect S.C. van Breda, under instruction from the meticulous Jim Ashton. The garden design was strongly influenced by Edna Walling.
The architectural detailing of Millamolong homestead is charming and its setting blends in with the

are collectors’ items. The earth colour of the bricks quarried and fired on nearby land enhance the
numerous verandahs that flow onto the adjacent lawn.

Millamolong Enterprises
Polo
Millamolong is renowned for its breeding of quality polo ponies. The established polo field and registered Millamolong Polo Club and club house will remain with Millamolong West, and welcomes new members. Millamolong, directly adjacent, also lends itself to the breeding and training of horses with a custom built horse management facility.
Millamolong 4-Star Vineyard And Award Winning Wines
In 1999, a carefully selected site at 600m above sea level was chosen to establish a cool climate irrigated vineyard. It produces Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Riesling and Chardonnay varietals. 70 acres (28ha) planted to vines have produced up to 350 tonnes of grapes per annum, with water sourced from the magnificent 125MgL licensed storage dam. There is a Cellar door vigneron’s license (No. 24012894).
Millamolong’s wines have won gold, silver and bronze medals at national and international wine shows. (A full list is available on request). James Halliday, author of “The Wine Companion” (2010) listed Millamolong as a four star vineyard, ranking it in the top 12% of vineyards in Australia.
Subdivision
Located in one of the most sought-after rural regions, Millamolong is close to the cities
of Orange and Bathurst. With its scenic countryside and river frontage, Millamolong
has an approved 5 lot subdivision.
Historic Millamolong
The history of Millamolong dates back to its original settlement in the early 1800’s. There are a number of buildings on the property which reflect this period including:
Original Millamolong Farmhouse
The original farmhouse was built using wooden slabs in the 1830’s and later extended in brick in the late 1800’s by the Rowlands family.
The Post Office
An attractive stone building constructed on-site of river rocks (originally known as the smallest Post Office in N.S.W.).
The Property
Millamolong is an extremely productive and well located agricultural holding – bounded on the northern side by the Belubula River and principally comprising rich red loam and basalt country with some small areas of shale. The landscape is scenic - undulating to hilly with large areas of pastured or arable country.
Dating back to the “wool boom” Millamolong is renowned as an outstanding livestock breeding and fattening property. Today, the whole property, comprising approximately 8,500 acres is one of the largest in the central west of N.S.W. It is renowned for its livestock production – including sheep and wool, beef cattle and polo ponies. It includes a highly regarded
4-star cool climate vineyard.
Farm Accommodation
There are 3 main cottages available for property management and staff. These include Wattle Cottage (3 bedroom), Primrose Cottage (2 bedroom), Hilltop Cottage (3 bedroom). Currently these are used as part of the commercial Farm Stay operation.
Enterprises
Millamolong in total currently runs approx. 9,500 Merino/crossbred sheep, 1,500 Poll Hereford/Angus cattle, and 150 horses.
It is suggested that the Millamolong homestead lot, rated at 3 DSE per acre (7.4 DSE per hectare) – approx. 21,000 DSE could run 700 breeding cows on a self-replacing herd basis and 3,000 crossbred or Merino ewes – or a variation of this mix.
