About The Central West – NSW
Premium agriculture, rural lifestyle, horticulture, viticulture, tourism, recreation (Wyangala Dam), Carcoar Livestock Exchange.
The Central West's is divided into two climate regions – the east region is higher, wetter and hillier, suitable for orchards, vegetable growing, vineyards and pastoralism. The west region is flatter, drier suitable for pastoral and grain crops activities.
Agriculture has long been a mainstay in the Cowra Council area and a key characteristic of the area is the diversified production that combines cropping with sheep meat, wool or cattle production. These primary products have given rise to value adding industries - flour milling, stock feeds, meat processing and fruit preserving.
Surrounded by farmland on the Lachlan River, Viticulture is a now the major industry in the Cowra area. The first vineyards were planted in the 1970s and were predominantly chardonnay. Since this time, a range of varieties have had success, including shiraz and verdelho. The Cowra Wine Show in July is the third largest in the country.
This climate and the rich soils of the Cowra Council area has seen stone fruit including cherries become an iconic part of the rich harvest of the region.
